FEll Basic Trees Manually


Also known as Chainsaw Level 2, this course applies to individuals who are involved in arboriculture, forestry, agriculture, conservation and land management, local government, emergency services and other government agency operations, responsible for felling basic trees using a chainsaw. It will provide individuals with the skills and knowledge required that may be required to assess and manually fall small trees with a low level of complexity and to complete operator maintenance. Trees classified as basic trees may have some of the following characteristics:

  • lean and distribution of the crown weight does not create a complex situation to assess, place the cut or fall

  • no excessive lean

  • no visible damage or defect

  • uniform in structure

  • species that are not prone to free splitting and adverse reactions during felling

  • single stem or non-complex multi-stems

  • small or medium diameter that can be safely felled using standard and basic felling techniques

  • site characteristics that do not add significant complexity to the operation

Important information prior to enrolment

+ Course Delivery

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an Allens Training Pty Ltd or Third party facility.

+ Entry Requirements

Participants must have:

  • The physical capacity to use a chainsaw whilst wearing the appropriate PPE to fell basic trees
  • Basic skills to interpret workplace documentation, use technical and workplace-specific vocabulary to accurately and legibly complete workplace records and forms, select and use appropriate spoken communication strategies with work colleagues and other personnel on-site when felling trees, and interpret hand signals with other operators to ensure safe tree felling and to complete routine calculations and report on size, length and diameter of felled trees

+ Course Duration

  • Face to Face – 14 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
  • Refresher - 7 hours (minimum)

+ Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

+ Certificate Renewal Requirements

No industry recommended renewal is identified on the certificate, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods.

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
